DANCE group Shuffle Step Tappers had a chance to take centre stage at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff last week.

Three members of the group, which is based in Royal Wootton Bassett and who have an average age of 60, took the trip to Cardiff to watch the matinee performance of Top Hat, starring leading man Alan Burkitt.

The group had a chance to meet Alan, who plays Jerry Travers in the show, and enjoy a backstage tour after the performance as well as pick up some tips.

Dancer Trish Miles Crust said: “We thoroughly enjoyed this high-energy show, with great music, beautiful costumes and fabulous dancing. We left motivated and inspired to learn and practise more.”

Shuffle Step Tappers kicked off in 2009 and now meet every Thursday to rehearse. Top Hat tells the story of Broadway sensation Jerry Travers, who dances his way across Europe to win the heart of society girl Dale Tremont.

Made famous by the RKO film starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, the show is packed full of Irving Berlin’s greatest hits including Cheek to Cheek, Top Hat, White Tie and Tails, Let’s Face the Music and Dance and Puttin’ on the Ritz.

Top Hat is at Wales Millennium Centre until Saturday, January 24 and then at the New Theatre, in Oxford, from January 28 to February 7.
