AFTER touring with Carmen and La Traviata, The Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back to the Wyvern Theatre on Tuesday with Rigoletto – a tragic tale of misunderstanding, revenge and sacrifice.

Its heart-rending story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunchbacked court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto’s beautiful daughter Gilda. The opera’s original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to the curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter had been seduced by the Duke with Rigoletto’s encouragement.

The curse comes to fruition when Gilda in turn falls in love with the Duke and eventually sacrifices her life to save him from the assassins hired by her father.

Rigoletto is one of Verdi’s best-loved masterpieces, and is considered as standard repertoire. The opera includes the Duke’s much loved cynical aria ‘La donna e mobile’.

Rigoletto will start at 7.30pm. Tickets cost between £30 and £36. To book call 01793 524481 or visit swindontheatres.co.uk
