ONCE upon a time youth theatre troupes were few and far between in Swindon and Dorcan was no exception.

That is until 14 years ago when community stalwart Nigel Sharp and a dedicated team remedied this oversight and formed Dorcan Performing Arts Group.

Ever since, the group has been offering children over the age of nine the chance to learn the ins and outs of theatre production, as well as singing, dancing and acting.

“It was founded in 2001 by the Dorcan management team after realising that the east of Swindon was mainly offering community sporting activities,” said Gina Musty, DPAG business manager.

“An application for lottery funded was raised by Nigel Sharp and the head teacher of Dorcan Academy. This was successful and gave the groundings for DPAG.

“The first meeting was held in April 2001 and 35 people turned up. The rest is now history.

“A flow of people participate every Tuesday evening, the average attendance has been 60 peaking at some points to 80.”

Members do not have to attend auditions to join, but they will be required to audition for parts in its two annual shows in December and July.

Over the years, the focus has remained on learning and, of course, having a great time.

“DPAG offers everyone the opportunity to tread the boards however much talent they have, focusing on team work, inspiring the members to try something new.

“We focus on friendship and giving young people a focus away from normal everyday life. It is all about being happy.

“Every one works as a team to produce a production, then the community are invited to watch. Again, it’s all about the local community.”
