YOUNGSTERS sung, tapped, twirled and leapt across the stage at Commonweal School last week as students took part in a showcase of performances from famous Musical Theatre shows.

Students at the Old Town academy presented a collection of performances and gave their own twist on Broadway taking inspiration from classical hit musicals such as Chicago, Grease, Rent, Wicked and Annie.

Ali Sutcliffe, head of music at Commonweal, said: "Staff and students have worked tirelessly during their lunchtimes and afterschool to produce a high quality show and would love as many people as possible to share in the sharing of their work."

Performances took place at the school on Wednesday, June 17, and Thursday, June 18, in the main school hall.

Each night had a slightly different programme and showcased the talents of students in Year 7 to Year 10, who performed either in large groups, small ensembles or solo spots.

Claire Bowden, head of dance, said: "I was really pleased with the dance pieces the students were brilliant.

"It has been a lot of hard work, but really worth it. Both evenings were sold out and the audience showed their support by rapturous applause and lots of whooping."
