THE National Theatre’s multi award-winning production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has landed at the New Theatre Oxford.

Simon Stephens’s adaptation of Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel received seven Olivier Awards in 2013 including Best New Play, Best Director, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design. It also won the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Theatre and has been seen by over 200,000 people during its run in the West End.

As the play opens 15-year-old Christopher stands beside Mrs Shears’s dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork. It is seven minutes after midnight and the teenager is under suspicion. He records each fact in a book in a bid to solve the mystery of Wellington’s gruesome murder.

He has an extraordinary brain, and is exceptional at maths but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

As Christopher struggles to articulate his feelings and bewilderment at the world around him, his mind is unspooled and each thought translated into actions in the production. This sees Joshua Jenkins, who plays Christopher, ‘walk on walls’ at a 90-degree angle, soar, jump and even do back flips in the tightly choreographed show.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is on at the New Theatre Oxford until July 18.
