Classical music fans are urged to ring for their carriages, as they are invited to step back in time to a musical soiree in an elegant 18th century Viennese drawing room.

The Swindon Recital Series welcomes The Revolutionary Drawing Room, a string quartet who recreate the sights and sounds of A Viennese Quartet Party in the company of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn.

Joining the two maestros in the original quartet were Dittersdorf and Van Hal.

Today's revolutionary quart is made up of Adrian Butterfield on violin, Kathryn Parry on violin, Rachel Stott on viola and Ruth Alford on cello.

The musicians use instruments of the period and their recording of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet with Colin Lawson made it to no 17 in the UK Classical Music Charts.

Adrian is band leader and it is his passion for performing on period instruments from the 1600s to 19th century that inspired the idea of the Viennese Quartet Party show.

Kathryn Parry is a former member of the London Symphony Orchestra and was recently honoured with an ARAM by the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of her services to the music profession.

Rachael is both composer and player who is sought after for festivals all over the UK and in Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Slovenia and as far afield as Japan.

Ruth is in demand with a number of ensembles playing regularly with the Amadeus Quartet, English Baroque Soloists, Age of Enlightenment, Brandenburg Consort and Fiori Musicali.

When the quartet come to Swindon's Arts Centre on Saturday, April 9, Michael Kelly, a contemporary Irish tenor, will set the scene and the musicians will play a programme including Haydn’s ‘The Bird’, Mozart’s String Quartet in G Major, K. 387 and Dittersdorf’s String Quartet in A Major.

The Swindon Recital Series, set up 22 years ago by concert pianist Paul Turner, runs from September to April each year with the aim of bringing quality classical music to the town for everyone to enjoy.

The Revolutionary Drawing Room doors will open at 7.30pm and tickets are £15, £12 for seniors, £2.50 for students and children under 14 free. For more details visit www.swindonrecitalseries.org.uk - Flicky Harrison
