The Songs That Got Away Sheila Harrod and Friends Arts Centre 2nd July 2016
I joined a packed theatre for this intimate concert by Sheila Harrod and friends at the Arts Centre on Saturday. The concert, titled 'The songs That Got Away,' consisted of all genre of songs that maybe are not so popular now and are seldom sung. A few, of course, I knew having been involved with musical theatre shows for many years. Some of the songs came from shows that were played out many years ago but have now gone out of fashion for audiences to be attracted to them.
So what do you get when you have excellent singers, good songs and piano played by Sheila. An evening of exceptional talent that's what.
Could I pick my favourite? That's difficult. Each one of the songs had something a bit special whether it be the stunning voice, score, or full blown performance piece.
I loved the duet between Russell and Rachel. Also the quite beautiful, 'You Take My Breath Away', sung unaccompanied by Kathy Hobson. Becci Benson's, Carrie, was a toure de force to say the least as was Jill McCrea's, 'Daddy's Son.'
I have to say I enjoyed every piece and every solo, duet and group song from all the singers. Far too many to mention by name unfortunately..
Gary Bamford opened the second half with a Piano Entr'acte which he arranged himself and played sympathetically. you could have heard a pin drop throughout the theatre.
We are indeed blessed with so much amazing talent in this town. These singers, along with Sheila, Gary and the whole Kentwood Show Choir are quite frankly up with the best of them.
