A Swindon theatre company have been asked back to perform at the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Wrong Shoes Theatre wowed the Fringe audiences in 2014 with The Anima Project a dark comedy written by the actors themselves.

This time the company is tackling a tale of love and morality called An Account of a Savage which will be previewed in Swindon from Wednesday, July 20 to Friday, July 22.

The company was set up in 2010 by Luke and Hannah Marquez and is now a registered charity and the resident company of the Shoebox Theatre in Theatre Square, where they will premiere the drama, before heading north of the border into Scotland.

To get under the skin of this play the actors had to go back as far as the 1800s to uncover how society treated feral children.

Artistic Director Luke said: “Our research has uncovered both fascinating and harrowing stories about the treatment of wild children throughout history, it has made us question what it means to be human and how society views those who live outside of what we perceive as normal society.''

Swindon musician Gary Bamford has written an original sound track for the show. He collaborated with the actors and Luke says the music will immerse the audience deeper into the world of Joan, the savage child of the play's title.

The plot is based around Joan who is left alone in the forest as a little child. She is raised by wolves until 12 years later she ventures into a small town. She is put under the microscope by medical experts who plan to civilise her so she can return her to society.

Luke said: "Louise Catherwood, who plays Joan, has perhaps had the most challenging role to develop. We have had to work very intensely on both the physicality and vocalisation of Joan, but Louise has been great and taken on the role with gusto.”

Wrong Shoes Theatre Company revels in tackling sensitive or controversial subjects, telling stories in inventive ways such as their productions of Doctor Faustus and The Gathering.

Wrong Shoes Theatre has created a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to install their new stage curtains. For the past year members of the company have been converting Shoebox into a full functional theatre, gallery and rehearsal venue for performers, artists and audiences.
