YOUNG people are being given the opportunity to take to the stage this summer as Pauline Quirke’s performing arts academy launches its first summer school in Swindon.

The week long programme will run from August 8 with the ambitious aim of putting on a fully staged performance of Beauty and the Beast in just a week.

In an added boost, Q Productions, who will be running the camp, have decided not to charge an entry fee this year.

They hope it will provide young people who may not always be able to afford access to the arts with a greater opportunity to experience the opportunities on offer.

There will however be a one off £25 contribution per participant to cover insurance and other essential requirements but that will entitle the kids to their own souvenir summer school t shirt.

Pauline Quirke, Head Principal of The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts, said: “We have decided to scrap the entry fee.

“We know the wonderful effect drama has on young people and we want to offer the chance to everyone.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for young talent in Swindon; children will be trained by industry professionals and will get to experience the thrill and buzz of performing on stage in front of an audience of friends and family.”

Participants will be put through an intensive five-day rehearsal period, taking a script from page to stage, culminating in a full production of a well-known musical – both the summer school and the performance will take place at New College’s Phoenix Theatre.

The programme is open to all young people aged from six to 19 living in the Swindon area.

They will have the opportunity to be cast in roles such as the handsome rogue Gaston, the lovable housekeeper and teapot Mrs Potts or the prince’s loyal butler and enchanted clock Cogsworth.

Not forgetting, of course, the starring title roles of Beauty, or Belle, and the Beast.

Summer school cast members could also work as part of a professional ensemble performing show-stopping numbers such as ‘Be Our Guest’ and ‘Gaston’.

All participants will learn top quality choreography and professional directors will give them guidance on how to create characters for the stage.

Eddie Dredge, Director of Q Productions, said: “There will be a small administration cost of £25 to subsidise the expense of running the Summer School and to contribute towards the cost of a custom-made t-shirt for every student taking part, but we have kept this to an absolute minimum.

“This really is an invaluable opportunity for all budding actors out there.

“We’ve got a passionate and experienced team who can’t wait to inspire and enthuse the brilliant young people in this area. We really hope you will join us.”
