FLICKY HARRISON talks heartbreak with indie pop band

Jay Nudd, lead singer with up and coming indie pop band Lake Como, is living proof that suffering heartbreak is all grist to the mill for a songwriter.

The band's current single Milwaukee is based on Jay's own experience of a university summer romance that ended in tears.

As the main songwriter for Lake Como Jay grabbed for his pen and let the words flow before bringing it to the band to write the music together.

"I always write from personal experiences and how they make me feel,'' said Jay.

Milwaukee has now been picked up by BBC Radio 1 and is on the playlist.

"We’re absolutely over the moon about being playlisted and hearing one of our songs get played on Radio 1 was pretty surreal,'' said Jess Gould, the keyboard player.

Lake Como are currently working away in the studio under the guiding hand of Cam Blackwood, who has worked with George Ezra and London Grammar, to record their debut album.

The musicians will be playing some of the new tracks from the album when they come to Swindon's Level 3 in Commercial Road on Thursday, October 13.

"We’ve never been to Swindon before but we're really excited to come play and just excited for the whole tour!,'' said Jess.

The band are coming to Swindon as part of their own headline tour of the UK.

It has been a meteoric year for Lake Como as they have been signed to Columbia Records, and found themselves stablemates with such diverse musicians as Daft Punk, Stone Roses and Adele.

They were also invited to support Jack Garrett, Boxed In and Hidden Charms as well as performing at summer festivals such as Liverpool Sound City and Y'Not.

The video for Milwaukee is about moving on, and not allowing sad things to overcome you.

Jay said: “We wanted a video that would mirror the sentiment of the song, a road trip up the Californian coast gave us the perfect opportunity to do that. The song mainly looks at self-discovery, realisation and the excitement of things to come."

The summer sound of Milwaukee showcases the band's style of laid-back indie electronica. Jess said: "We've just put out a new single today called Weight of Fear and Doubt".

Joining Jay and Jess on stage in Swindon will be Liam Maxwell on drums, and Pete Bentley on bass. They will be supported by Yves.
