A new twist on an old tale is played out at Swindon Dance this month.

Where is Home? is presented by State of Emergency Dance Company at the Town Hall Studios in Regent Circus, on Friday, April 21 at 7.30pm.

The dance piece is set in Soweto in the late 1980s and features a young couple from very different neighbourhoods who fall in love. The young man's mother has just died and he comes up against the security forces at the same time as dealing with tribal issues. He and his girl decide to run away in this universal tale of the quest for adventure, love, fortune and freedom. The piece of theatre explores the price of fame, the horrors of war and oppression and the realisation that no matter how far you travel you can never escape from yourself. The young couple discover the very thing they seek is right under their nose.

The ancient tale updated is choreographed by by Bafana Matea, Michael Joseph and Dumisani Ngubane alongside an original score by Steve Marshall and Grammy winner Wouter Kellerman.

State of Emergency was set up in 1986 to merge dance and music in original productions. The founders are Deborah Baddoo MBE (Dance) and Steve Marshall (Music). Deborah specialises in jazz and African contemporary dance and has long been a keen supporter of black choreographers. She was awarded the MBE for her services to British dance in 2010.

Singer and instrumentalist, Steve, has worked with reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry which earned him Grammy nominations and led to collaborations with both Keith Richards and George Clinton.

State of Emergency aims to encourage new choreography and performance, alongside showcases, tours, festivals, conferences and outreach training. The company also tailor projects and programmes for primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities.
