THE WOOTTON Bassett Light Operatic Society is staging a performance of musical comedy The Producers at the town’s Memorial Hall from April 26-28.

Performers from WBLOS dressed in costume attracted customers outside the hall to sell tickets ahead of their first show on Thursday.

The show is slight departure for the society with its somewhat un-PC nature holding the potential to shock, but the cast is confident that it is one of the funniest shows they have taken part in. Mark Harper is directing the show with musical direction from Richard Abrams. A large chorus made up of many familiar WBLOS favourites will sing their hearts out during the run.

Mel Brooks’ show tells the story of a washed-up Broadway producer Max Bialystock (performed in Bassett by Simon Roberts) who tries to make a million dollars by scamming old ladies out of their hard-earned bucks. Hysterical man Leo Bloom (Paul de Boer) forms a partnership with Max after stumbling on a get-rich-quick scheme involving the worst musical ever written.

Their partnership is thrown off the rails by the arrival of Swedish actress Ulla (Amy Westwood), and there are amazing comedy cameos from outrageous directing partnership Roger and Carmen (Holger Alsmeier and Rob Hall) and the German madman Franz Liebkind (Simon Welch).

Tickets for all shows are available from the Post Office in Royal Wootton Bassett or wblos.org.uk, priced between £9-11. Shows start at 7:30 pm, with a 2.00 pm matinee on Saturday.
