THERE is something about Robin Sebastian that makes you smile as soon as you start talking to him.
The actor is full of energy, throws saucy innuendo around all over the place and drops into his Kenneth Williams impersonation continuously. It is obviously that he was born to play the role of the late star, and it is one he does with a twinkle in his eye.
“It’s absolutely fab playing him,” said Robin, who is starring as Kenneth in Stop Messing About.
“I’m having so much fun and we’re pulling out all the stops on this tour. It’s like a dream come true, I honestly can’t believe that this is my job sometimes. It’s wonderful.”
Robin’s talent for imitating the star, best known for catchphrases such as “oooooh matron” and “stop messing about”, was spotted while he was working as a waiter at a party. “I had a lot of down time to begin with as an actor,” he said.
“I was resting so much I was almost comatosed!
“I was doing my Kenneth impression while I was serving drinks, just generally trying to amuse people, and a bloke came over to me and said he knew of a casting director looking to cast someone as Kenneth Williams.”
While he didn’t end up with that role, in 2003 he auditioned for a production of Round The Horne and landed the part with his flawless audition.
Robin, who has toured in the musical The Producers with Peter Kay, also secured himself a role in the new Carry On film that was to go into production.
“Having that audition was one of the best things I have ever done,” he said.
“I was going to play Sir Desmond Uppingham-Knightly and Kelly Brook was due to be my secretary.
“It looked like the film was going to be a lot of fun.”
The film was put on hold following the death of the Carry On series producer Peter Rogers last year.
