MEMBERS of the Wootton Bassett Light Operatic Society were out in force over the weekend promoting their next production, Sinbad the Sailor.

The popular group, which produces at least two shows a year, was recently nominated for the second year in a row for the June Barker NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Award) for best pantomime for their 2014 production of Peter Pan.

Each year the South West section of NODA reviews around 1,000 productions, including a significant number of pantomimes.

Two of the main leads return in Sinbad, Hatty Aspell as the principal boy and Stuart Dark as the dame.

Mike Davies, who was chairman at the time of Peter Pan and also played Captain Hook, said: “It’s superb to get the recognition again from NODA – we always get a really positive response from the audiences, and to have that backed up by the experts who see so many shows tells us we are definitely doing something right.”

In 2013 the society was also nominated for Alice in Pantoland, in addition to winning a Regional Award for Development, and the follow-up could not have been more different, with a different director, a commercial script rather than a home-written one, and their biggest ever pantomime cast for the 10th anniversary. The awards are announced at the end of February.

Sinbad the Sailor is on at the Memorial Hall, in Royal Wootton Bassett, from January 30 to February 1, including matinees on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets cost £9 or £7 for concessions, while family tickets cost £28.
