From a classic period drama to a masterclass in physical theatre, Swindon is a hotbed of theatrical delights this week.

Daphne Breakspear, who was awarded an MBE medal two years ago, for her services to amateur drama, and her husband Dennis, are the backbone of the Phoenix Players.

This season the theatre company is presenting the magical and uplifting play, Enchanted April, based on the novel by Elizabeth von Arnim.

Dennis is front of house manager for this production and is also a member of the set design team, which are undertaking the daunting task of transforming the Arts Centre, set in Swindon's Old Town, into San Salvatore, a wisteria-bestrewn villa in Italy. Daphne has a hands firmly on the box office reigns.

The eight-strong cast are under the direction of Sally Lovejoy, who is also one of the creative team constructing the set.

Emily Roberts, Steven King, Claire Brown and Courtenay Merchant are at the centre of the play set around Lottie and Rose's decision to escape their husbands and rainy London to spend the month of April in Italy. The feelgood drama changes their lives for ever.

Enchanted April is set in the 1920s and runs until Saturday, April 25 at 7.30pm nightly at the Devizes Road theatre. Tickets are £9 and £8 concessions from 07517690083.

The Phoenix Players are always happy to welcome new members and anyone interested should email info@phoenix-players.com.
