Album of the week Music For The People by The Enemy

Music For The People by The Enemy The album title sums up this CD. This is a corker without a weak track on it.

Elephant Song kicks off with some Sergeant Pepper-style psychedelia imitating the call of mammoths in the wild. The track develops into a pounding, exciting gallop of a rock band in full flight.

Next up is Time For Tears, a powerful song with some lush guitar and gritty vocals. It is no wonder the guys picked it as a single. The muted drums build into overdrive and then die away as the keys fade out. All the songs on this album have a defined beginning, middle and end as in all the best stories.

Keep Losing is a fine, controlled blues ballad. It is a strong song with gripping vocals and an angel choir as backing.

Don’t Break the Red Tape is track of thundering guitar with some sweet blues riffs interwoven into a complex tapestry of a soundscape.

51st State has keyboards to the fore and a more pop rock dance beat, Sing When You’re In Love is a melodic number showing the softer underbelly of rock, the gentle side of the hardcore beast and also a good choice as a single.

Last Goodbye is another ballad with surf crashing against the beach as the base underlying a stunning melody. It has an anthemic chorus and that frisson of lightning in the air.

Be Somebody is a catchy little number that grabs the attention. It is a real foot-tapper with sharp lyrics and a sing-a-long chorus.

Nation Of Checkout Girls is a bouncy soft rock song in the style of Pulp, with the same edge that strips away the sugar coating.

Silver Spoon is the end track which completes the album on a high note of pure class. It is another driving hard rock track with all the force of a gigantic waterfall. Again we feel the influence of The Beatles with some great harmonies and an apocalyptic build of unleashed guitar as a finale to the song and the album. Lovely stuff.

Flicky Harrison.
