Get Doeser in the charts!

A wise man once noted that to be English is to crave disappointment, a sentiment the Hamsters From Hell new release encapsulates quite nicely.

Since they were launched on an unsuspecting world sometime in the 1840s, or so it would seem, they have shocked and awed audiences in equal measure.

Combining great musicianship and amusing stage antics with bawdy lyrics and the most dishevelled front man in history, the inimitable Ian Doeser, pictured right, they have become something of a Swindon legend.

Oh No! It’s Christmas Again, sees them doing what they do best, old school rhythm and booze, blues grooves and a damned good moan about the commercialisation of Christmas, a band after my own grouchy heart. Think Southside Johnny fronted by Mr Scrooge or Dr Feelgood being played at the wrong speed and you have a starting point for the song.

At a time when Christmas music has come to be dominated by sponsored cash-in albums or Simon Cowell’s latest boy-bland creation, it’s good to remember that most of the truly great Christmas songs have been subversive in their nature. Fairytale of New York and Stop the Cavalry might not have been in the true spirit of what most people think of as summing up the Yuletide festivities, but they are the songs that have earned longevity. This song could easily be on that list.

The single can be obtained from itunes and 208records.co.uk for the price of a few M&S mince pies and I think you all need to get on board with this.

Imagine if there were enough sales for it to see a bit of chart action, imagine seeing Doza and crew playing on This Morning or pressing the buttons on the National Lottery show. That would be something - imagine the look on Simon Cowell’s face. Think of this as not just a single, more a common cause to subvert the banality of the season. - DAVE FRANKLIN

A fantastic article, how refreshing it would be to see "real" music top the charts!

Doza has been a regular fixture on the Swindon Music Scene for over 30 years now, he's played hundreds of gigs, always supported local music and has been an inspiration to plenty, wouldn't it be great to see him and the rest of the Hamsters make that Christmas chart.

Well written review Mr Franklin, someone give this lad more column inches.

A great article that wasn't choking on its own Christmas cheer (which isn't easy to avoid this time of year). Brave man! I am looking forward to reading more like this.

I always wondered how he spelt his name. I always thought it was Doza...silly me. We learn something new everyday. I hope The Hamsters From Hell can stand up well against X Factor. Here's hoping!

If Swindon really can become Disneyworld's first twin town, then getting Doeser in the chart might just be achievable!

Nice one Mr F, ACE column again!
Thumbs up for Doza and crew...can't wait to see it topple Cowell and Co's effort!
I must admit I had to look up "banality"! ~:D

Odd, I can't believe this is the only comment! Hey ho. Well, what can I say. Not sure Mr Doeser can be described as cultural, but he is one of our hidden gems. I will buy this and hope you do too and he becomes a star. Would be brilliant if he could lead the Disney parade!
