Sounds Around Town...with Dave Franklin

I will apologise in advance that this week’s column is a bit one-sided, but tonight sees the launch of Swindon’s annual celebration of local music, The Shuffle. In this, its fourth year, it has, like much in these fiscally challenging times, undergone a slight downsizing, but is still hosting 53 acts in three venues across four days, and the most you will have to pay for any night is £3, with some of the stages actually being free.

Speaking as both a punter and a player at previous events, the one thing I love about this brilliant gathering is that it gives everyone who loves music or is involved in the local scene a chance to come together.

Normally bands are scattered around the local and not so local venues, engineers and promoters are working at their job at hand and punters probably being selective about what they spend their cash on.

This weekend, though, will see all of those elements coming together in one big party and if previous years are anything to go by, the atmosphere will be one of solidarity towards local music with more than a dash of laughter and buffoonery thrown in for good measure.

So tonight at The Victoria is where it all starts. As if to ease you in gently, it’s all about covers and tributes, not normally the sort of thing I go for, as you well know, but the calibre of this line up is so high, it’s one that you are not going to want to miss.

As if a tribute to Rammstein and the chaos that is 2 Sick Monkeys isn’t enough, Kova Me Badd have come out of retirement just to headline this show.

Friday, again at The Victoria, is when the original bands kick off and it’s a nice mixed bag, from the dulcet and ethereal tones of Matilda to the infectious alt-country grooves of The Shudders taking in the dark garage rock vibes of The Dacoits and the pop vigour of The Alfonz.

On a footnote, this will be The Alfonz last ever show and I’m sure I’m not the only one that wants to say a big thank you to them for some brilliant gigs over the last few years.

Saturday is where you will have to start deciding where to be and who to watch as the 12 Bar gets involved. The main stage will give some of the younger bands a chance to get some exposure with The Debuts, The Biskitts and Chuck Co-Stars starting things off before the more established bands take over.

For my money the ones to watch are excellent post rockers The Colorado, the genre hopping Let the Games Begin and, for those who like their music a bit more old school and sleazy, headliners The Love Rockets.

Outside on the garden stage it’s all a bit more sedate but always worth a look is the small girl with the big voice, Jo Stroud and the far too talented Theo Altieri.

Back up the hill and The Victoria also have two stages on offer. In the top bar the usual suspects, Gaz Brookfield and Tommaso Galati share the bill with newer faces such as Niall Badcock plus the legend that is Doza.

The main stage is one just brimming with brilliance. Buswell will be kicking proceedings off with his delicate string enhanced, graceful numbers. Both Charlie Bath and Matthew Kilford follow and my newest favourite band, The Off Chance, will be proving that folk music is back in fashion. Pignose will be delivering some southern spiritual blues and with Good Things Happen in Bad Towns and the brilliant Jon Trowbridge Band rounding the night off, it is a dream line up.

Sunday sees The Beehive getting in on the act, with a fairly acoustic bias from the likes of Billyjon, Moths and Leeches plus the crazy country and eastern of Lavington Bound plus Beehive regulars, gypsy folksters Sweet Plums.

And as that stage comes to an end there is just time to wander up to The Victoria for some cracking bands, including the electro tinged rockers, The Citizens, roots manoeuvres from HipRoute, vibrant anthems from Napoleon in Rags and The Disco PieRats blend of funk, hip hop, and indie rock.

The weekend bows out with the eight-legged rave machine that is Old School Tie.

Just remember to book Monday off.

Your column is ALWAYS one-sided.
Can you please for once go to a different venue other than the Vic/Beehive! And also please revue some new bands, I'm fed up of hearing about the Alfonz, they haven't made it after all the hype and they are losing their cuteness now so either they need to learn to start writing songs that matter or go away...

*Sigh* The venues you have mentioned don't exactly help themselves, do they? I haven't known Riffs to advertise their gigs anywhere for years, and getting info from the Rolly/Furnace can be like drawing blood from a stone. I'm sure Mr Franklin would glad feature their nights if they bothered promoting themselves.

Dear oh flipping dear. Hey, TheRocker, who are you really? You're quite obviously someone who knows Dave personally and has an axe to grind, yet you hide behind a lame pseudonym like a snivelling little coward. My view on the one-sidedness? It's Dave's column so she can write what he likes. He's written PLENTY about the Rolly/Furnace before and makes a point of "apologising" for the one-sidedness this week. I'm kicking off a new club night down The Furnace this weekend and it didn't get a mention. Am I bothered? Not in the slightest. Grow up and stop throwing your toys out of the pram.

Not sure what you're on about, I've seen loads of mentions of the Rolly/Riffs/the Furnace in this column! Of course the Vic and Beehive get lots of mentions because there's lots of original live music there.

Dave does a great job of trying to give original live music some much needed coverage, but at the end of the day it's his taste and his decision as to what he mentions. Sniping from the sidelines doesn't help anyone or achieve anything.

I'm glad we've made it to year 4 with The Shuffle, it has downsized a bit this year but it's still in business, still over 50 acts a significant amount of which haven't played the festival before.

Dave, thanks for a great preview piece on this year's Shuffle. I think the Adver benefits from having a writer who's a keen and active member of the local music community both as a musician himself and also a punter.

I find it incredibly embarrassing that certain people in Swindon seem to think creating false names to criticise people on the local forums / websites / facebook is a positive step. Surely someone writing positively about a selection of the events going on in Swindon is better than constantly sniping because you have been ostracised due to your constant negativity. Sorry Mr Pitt, but maybe people dont like you simply because of who you are and not due to a conspiracy of any type. Lets face it, who more welcome at gigs / events in Swindon? I will give you a clue, its Dave and not your constant whinging self aggrandising self. Maybe you should read your own facebook page, its full of references to you hating Swindon and how Birmingham is better - heres an idea, how about we have a whip round at the shuffle, Im sure we could get you a one way ticket!

yes they 'culd' 'culdnt' they. Maybe not you though. I would hate to think what a badly spelt report on some repetitive covers band at the Rolly would be.
Lets face it, if the Rolly was to get a write up, it would be easy - just write a glaringly obvious list of trad rock covers and just replace the really bad band name on a weekly basis! Voila!

Yes, because Dave knows every out of town band that comes to town. No, seriously he does - he knows more people than anyone, even people with lots of friends!!! Every person in the world in a band is his mate.. oh dear, you sad fool.
Oh and by the way, you may want to review previous columns - I think you will A) find lots of mentions of the venues you state B) find lots of mentions of bands that are new C) find lots of people that even Dave hasnt met yet!!!
Seriously, re-read them - theres a whole load of information just waiting for you to ingest (although it may not list anything about Bad Journey Blues Free Like A Wolf Stevens and his gig at the Rolly where he did a tribute to the covers band from the previous weekend).

Thought I'd just chip in and say to Davey1 and therocker that if they feel that they would like to make a more meaningful contribution to the music community, I am always looking for relevant content for Green Man Music which can be found @ http://greenmanmusic

let me know if you wish to submit anything.

Well you got your wish, they played their last gig at The Shuffle last night, the place was rammed and the set was brilliant. I still say that if you can find a better locally penned pop song than Summer Sun, then you are a better man than I. Oh hang on, you are, aren't you...thats the whole point.

P.S. Great to see the BisKetts featured. I still think they're the coolest band in Swindon

Dave is a legend all around the music scene and for a very good reason - he's truly passionate about music. I find it sad that even the most positive and upbeat article is derided by someone clearly with an axe to grind. You can't underestimate the amount of good Dave has done with his continued support for local bands. A good review is something that bands genuinely treasure, and because Dave is so highly regarded his words mean a lot to those bands he reviews. His encouragement has spurred on many bands and artists to do better and greater things, I wonder how many people have benefited from the sniping and bitter comments emanating from Davey1 and Therocker? One suspects the list of people seeking their views is a short one.
