Personal Overview - Second-time Essex Conservative candidate, who has taken the reins from Teresa Gorman in Billericay, having moved over from the adjacent Basildon constituency, infamous as the spiritual home of 'Essex Man'. Has a traditional Tory background, coming from the Armed Services and the City. His four-year army service saw tours of Germany, Cyprus and Northern Ireland. As yet a relative unknown at national level, but with stronger local connections. He has successfully establish himself locally and halted the Labour rot, in a seat which saw the Tory majority fall to 1,356 for Gorman in 1997 (due to both the pro-Labour swing and the candidature of a Loyal Conservative). Resigned as a shadow spokesman after voting against the party line over war with Iraq in March 2003, but was quickly reappointed. In his health role he was involved in producing his party's clinical negligence proposals. Within Parliament he has opposed ID cards and has favoured defending the green belt.
