CONFUSION surrounds the future of speed cameras in Swindon.
Last November Swindon Council threatened to pull out of the group which runs the speed camera operation unless Government agreed to plough all the revenue they generate back into the town.
In January the Adver revealed Government had refused to hand back the cash.
Despite the council adopting the drop out motion at a meeting in November, still nothing has changed.
Now the councillor behind the withdrawal plan says talks on the cameras' futures in Swindon are ongoing.
But Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership says it has heard nothing from the council and has funding for the next year.

Strange headline - I would have thought that even a rookie reporter would have worked out that the council had absolutely no intention or ability to get rid of the speed cameras.
The council were just niaive when they thought they would be a nice little earner - just like the parking attendants. The government paid them a bung from the fines for a couple of years then grabbed the lot.
Mr Brown just used them as yet another stealth tax and backed them with courts using specially "trained" magistrates that only know the word "guilty".
No, no hope of getting rid of them they are part of the tax system that will help pay for the 10% tax band mess - and I will still lose £60 even after the payback.
Sorry Mrs Snelgrove, no chance of a vote from me thisd time.

I think an easier way for SBC to curtail the activities of cameras designed as a revenue generator is to look up those that fail to meet the HO criteria, one such camera is the one on the stretch of Oxford Road, between The Greenbridge Roundabout and the White Hart.

I was quoted Data Protection etc such that the statistics could not be revealed.

Police traffic cars on patrol are a greater deterrent to speeding motorists and they can also spot vehicles with lights out or being driven erratically, if these traffic cars are fitted with the correct technology they can also catch untaxed / uninsured vehicles.
That I my opinion would make the roads safer for all.

The criteria for these cameras is that in the previous 3 years there have been at least 3 fatals or 15 injury accidents at the location. When I looked up the Oxford Road ones, there had been .1 of an accident average. Far from meeting the criteria. When I wrote and pointed this out needless to say I didn't get a reply. Did you also know the Magistrates are told to always find someone guilty, as to not would put the whole system under the spot light. When I got caught at these lights, it was physically impossible for me to have gone through them at the time stated, as I had a time stamped CC receipt from Car Phone Warehouse which would have meant I had taken just 3 minutes at Lunch time to travel along Great Western way. Car Phone Warehouse very kindly did a check on their machine which showed the clock interface was accurate. The Sergeant at the CTO said it wouldn't matter I would be found guilty. Justice at it's best.

I haven't been caught speeding yet, but there and then, my bike has only got five gears. I also note that someone made reference to the wordsmith Poemless Tony's 's' in licence! I was more interested in the word sineage, but I would like to think it's part of the poetry of the master wordsmith, as I too (no wordsmith though) also make many spilling errors, as I can unveil, but luckily enough for me, no-one noticed.

So we now live in a society that keeps private, information that might show we the public are being unnecessarily ripped off. If the sineage was much clearer, especially as one enters Swindon off the Toys r Us roundabout ie extra big 30's on the tricky bit where drivers have just negotiated the busy roundabout (and perhaps missed the two Big 30s as they preferred to keep their eyes on dashing roundabout traffic.. None of us wants points on license nor £60 fines. I tried in vane to get the statistics from those powers that "we-let-be" about how many fines there have been for this stretch.. I was quoted Data Protection etc such that the statistics could not be revealed. What about getting rid of the mobile vans as well. I get fed up with seeing the snooper van parked in a bus layby in Wroughton.
Strange how this is the only bus layby that doesn't have double yellow lines. SBC say that it wont cause an obstruction because the bus drivers prefer not to use bus laybys.
Bet the story would be different if a motorist parked there - SBC traffic gestapo would be there in seconds.

To add a bit of sanity to speed cameras, I fail to understand if the object is road safety (we know it isn't but IF)the most effective signs appear to be those who flash 30 at your, instinctively you slow down until it goes out, job done. These could be used at 40 or 50. Or is that too simple.

I agree with you RFM, great idea, but if people are excessively speeding (say 15 MPH over the limit) then a fine and points on the licence as well. Job done.
