Malpas rules out swoop for Gillespie

By Anthony Marshall »

MAURICE Malpas has categorically' denied rumours linking Town with a move for Cheltenham striker Steve Gillespie.

The former Liverpool and Bristol City front man has attracted attention from the Championship and League One following an impressive season which saw him hit 16 goals as Cheltenham avoided the drop on the final day.

But after being a rumoured target for Town, Malpas has been quick to rule out a move down the A417 for the hit man.

Town already have a healthy array of striking options including Simon Cox, Lee Peacock, Billy Paynter, Blair Sturrock, Barry Corr and Ben Joyce, and with that in mind, Malpas revealed his transfer priorities lie elsewhere on the pitch.

With Cheltenham also believed to value Gillespie at around £300,000, Town's manager revealed that, even if he was interested, the forward is well out of their reach.

Malpas told the Swindon Advertiser: "I can categorically state that we have never even mentioned him (Gillespie) as a possibility.

"Firstly, I need to get other players in other positions before I even look at a striker.

"And also I would imagine that Cheltenham would be asking for a fee, so that rules us out anyway."

Drrrrrrrrr, we are getting the season tickets at less than £10 a match. Th eclub aren't exactly going to be rolling in it are they? They are going to need to sell 4,500 to match last years, AND add 1,500 to the gate.
AF & co have already parted with millions to save the club, they are now making football cheaper for us to watch. I would ask have YOU splashed the cash yet on an ST. If so good on yer, if not don't moan, put YOUR money where your mouth is, cos the new owners already have

You talk much sense Phil and I definately agree with you, but the thing that gets supporters excited is new and better players coming in. You don't have to spend big bucks to get Championship quality in and it is a sign of intent from the board and would sell more season tickets than anything else. You have to speculate to accumulate in any business. If you want rubbish and to be static in league 1, then free transfers are fine. If we struggle this coming season, then season tickets would not sell the following season, regardless of price. People are expecting a promotion push this coming season, simple as!!!

Yes you are right there, a great signing or two would create a buzz. But, the club can't be seen to be splashing the cash. instantly it puts up the potential cost of new players not to mention the wage demands. I have no doubt what so ever that if the right player was available at the right price Af would buy. He proved that by splashing out 250k on Simon Cox. As you rightly point out you don't have to splash out big to get championship quality.
I just get sick & tired of some who expect STFC to suddenly become the Chelsea of Div 1, & moan that the board aren't spending. (They are, but wisely.) The same people expect others to stump up hundreds of thousands, but won't stump up a diacount season ticket them selves.
I suspect the types of players that are being targetted are those who are currently unheard off. Types in the mould of Sam Parkin, before we signed him for 50k from Chelsea. Players who can't quite get into a premiership clubs first team but who have the talent.
Just look at those who we've had on loan & some could have been signed (Davis, Carrick, Milner, were all unheard of when we got them)

Applying that logic we'd be bringing in new players for every position. MM is quite right -
in terms of strikers we are better off than in other key areas, and he is quite rightly setting his priorities in other areas.

The fact remains that IF we are seriously going for promotion next season, we WILL have to get some quality players on board..including another striker..and we will not achieve that by getting in free transfers and loan signings! We as supporters need to continue buying the cut price season tickets, wilst A.F @ co get there heads around the fact that promotion will NOT be achieved without some financial investment by themselves in the playing squad.

I understand what you say but i'd have thought that the combination of Cox, Corr (hopefully fit), Paynter, Joyce, and Peacock with Sturrock (as back up in emergency) gives more than reasonable options up front. Bearing in mind we will probably field two wide men, we are only looking at any two out of 5 out and out strikers out of the 5 named for most matches. But if you look at the defence that level of option just isn't there. Brian Clough's success came with his philosophy that you get a solid defence in place first and foremost.

Strongly disagree with you re Blair Sturrock. He runs the lines and always gives 150%. Unfortunately I think it has been due to the midfield not pushing up that he has been made to look as if he gets stuck with the ball - in reality there is no-one to pass it to. How many games did you watch last season?

With MM stating that their wont be much spending on players in the close season. We will have mostly same squad of players as last season. All this crap about promotion is load crap. The currant squad was only good enough to finish 13th If we win promotion it will be biggest upset since we won league cup in 69. come october we will be looking for new manager.

No shortage of strikers huh? In that case can somebody tell me how many goals Lee Peacock, Billy Paynter, Blair Sturrock, Barry Corr and Ben Joyce all scored between them last season? My guess is it will be less than what 1 decent striker should get in a season, especially if we are intending to challenge for promotion!!

Ok - can't really argue with that!! I'm not reading too much into the "we won't pay money" statements. Like a previous poster said we wouldn't be wise advertising that we have money to splash.
How about this though? We get in some decent prospects on loan, see whether they fit, and then offer to buy? Everyone wins and we already know their capabilities.

glasred, glastonbury says...
3:59pm Thu 22 May 08

Getting decent players in on loan is the ideal solution..but generaly the best players go to those clubs who cough up the cash, and the rest then go out on loan.We need some of the BEST players available at this level if we are to compete for promotion with the clubs in leauge one who are willing or able to splash the cash!

Oldtown68, Gloucester says...
4:04pm Thu 22 May 08

There will be plenty of players available on free transfers who are good enough for our division, a lot of them will move for a few more pounds in their pocket each month or if they think the club is going somewhere and is more stable than their current club. We have lost players in the past and still are; MC off to Cardiff. Give the manager a chance most players are still under contract until the end of June/July. If I was after a player I would keep quite until the deal was signed just like MM is doing. Why alter others and increase the chance of being pipped at the post.

I think you talk Bllx, my point was that the season ticket is discounted for a reason, yes I do go to the games, I also work in Brimingham and sometimes have to miss the evening games, AF bought the club and then installed the wonderful MM who took us from 2 points off the play offs with 2 games in hand to almost being relegated, now whilst I see that we improved towards the end of the season I still think you are asking a lot for 6K of people to put their hands in their pocket and pay for the ST up front, I will be buying two because I am a mug, but I don't think its the fantastic deal that many people keep shouting about, we will still have a muppet of a manager and no new players, but I assure you that I will not be happy should next year start the way MM kicked his Town career off. I actualy think the squad we have is a good squad but we should be looking for a couple of QUALITY players not spending like Chelsea....

Plymouth fans should be up in arms, their new manager, can't remember his name, took over a promotion chasing team and only finished 12 points above the relegation zone!!

Saying you don't want someone to renew is an equally twatish thing to say though as everyone is entitled to their opinion. As it stands I'm sure we will spend some money over the summer as despite being a good deal some ambition needs to be shown as no one in this league buys a season ticket hoping to have a boring season in mid-table or struggling. If the club is to achieve Fitton's aim of reaching the play-offs then some fees will need to be paid and bigger wages paid otherwise we'll end up no better than we are now which is mid-table. 2500 of the 6000 season ticket holders next season will be 'new' season ticket holders and to try and make them regular season ticket holders in the future a decent season on the pitch will be needed to prove the money is worthwhile. If we struggle in the bottom half of the league for example we'd get no where near the 6000 mark the following season. The ticket price reduction is a novelty as you can't indefinately reduce prices so it needs to be made to count during 08/09. That's why I think eventually Fitton will have to pay-out at somepoint over the summer and probably will.

What concerns me is that MM is of the belief that he already has top notch strikers and doesn't need to bring in a fox in the box. Joyce is just starting and it would be unfair to expect him to deliver 20 goals in his first season, but one never knows. Cox should be around the mark, but the other 4 will as harry potter quite rightly said struggle to make 20 games each let alone score 20 goals. For me they are no better than fringe players and if it means moving 2 of them out on loan to make room for 1 proven goal scoring striker, so be it, with 6 of them chasing 2 places it's a case of too much quantity and too little quality to make a genuine push for the championship.

Im sure Fitton and co no what they are doing. People mite be put off by them not splashing out but i agree that we do-not really need to. we have an excellent youth team coming through, and the players we have now, bar a few (i.e. sturrock, pook and paynter), can certainly challenge next year. we will sign players, but even if they are on loan surely the better players will be more willing to play for us on loan, especially with the direction the club is going now etc. i know it might not bring the punters in without spending money, but fitton and the others will know what it takes and what personel they need to bring in for us to challenge next year. keeping the faith! completely agree, we had better get a 'new' decent striker in and hopefully ship the likes of paynter, sturrock & joyce out on loan or I wont be going very often next season. Peacock/cox seems to be an ok first choice partnership but I think it could be better. We had 200k to spend on cox so why have suddenly got no more money to spend at all and we are only in the middle of the table with regards to matching wages. This board need to wise up - even in league 1 some money will need to be spent to get us out of the division..

Well said and absolutely correct glos_robin. janaage you have a very short memory it was to close for comfort and may of been worse if some of the teams we played at the end had something to play for,not forgetting two of the bottom teams had points deducted which made our lives easier.

STFC!!!!!
Hello STFCcountyground if they don't do everything in there power to bring the punters this season now they have dropped the season tickets then they will miss the opportunity, making the S/Ts cheap this season and aiming for 6000 means they will have to play well and finish in the top 6 because non-die hards wont come back and the prices cant stay that low for long, Also feel if we don`t reach 6000 then the board may lose interest.

This is just a thought but perhaps the board are testing the water to see what loyalty there is out there in support of STFC.There are a lot of bridges to be rebuilt after the last few years and they are weary of that.If we want a decent standard of football at Swindon we need to show our loyalty to them .I think they have tried to bild a bridge by lowering prices which is agood start because a lot of fans never came simply because they could not afford to go to all the games.I do think however that they do need to be seen spending some money. Not silly amounts but if they see a player they really need they must show that they mean business. This would definately speed up the sale of season tickets which are great prices. At the end of the day most fans who have not had a season ticket in the past will wait until they see who the new signings are.

Lot of sense in that. It's a fine balancing act between expected income and money to spend on players.
At the end of the day i'm grateful that the Board saved the club, and are introducing some sensible financial control. I'm as keen as anyone for us to be challenging next season. If it takes one more season in this division while we are getting financial stability, tying down our better players with ongoing contracts, bringing on the youth players, and picking up a few new ones - i'll settle for that.

Plymouth fans should be up in arms, their new manager, can't remember his name, took over a promotion chasing team and only finished 12 points above the relegation zone!! I really hope you don't buy a season ticket, or if you do you're not sat anywhere near me, your negativity is astounding.

I couldn't careless whether he buys a season ticket or not, my point was I hope I don't have to sit near this bloke.

The negative rubbish he comes out with constantly is a major irritant. Some town fans seem to forget we have spent most of our history in the bottom two divisions.

We now have owners who have the resources, and business knowledge to transform this club into a financially stable club, however this is not the overnight project that some seem to think it is.

The club was rotten from the inside, financially, and that will take months, if not years to address.

Now if I'm being "twattish" to say that I don't want to be near supporters like the fella I was responding to, then fair enough.
