MOTORISTS cruised down the Blunsdon bypass for the first time yesterday, after a stretch of the multi-million pound new road was formally opened.

A northbound stretch of the new part of the A419 was opened yesterday morning - with no hiccups.

Traffic lights are now being calibrated to deal with traffic flow along the road.

Developers will soon be moving on to the Turnpike roundabout, which is due for removal soon, followed by the opening of the southbound carriageway.

Robin Miller of the Highways Agency said workers were making remarkable progress on the £65.5m route in spite of last year's floods, which saw plans grind to a halt.

"Summer was supposed to be a time to get the bulk of the work done but last year's floods understandably slowed the work down," he said.

The completion of the Blunsdon bypass is set for the end of the year, something Mr Miller says is still achievable.

"This year work is going well and although we're not ahead of schedule we're doing okay," he said.

Yesterday the Adver reported how the owners of the Blunsdon House Hotel became the very first people to drive on the new Blunsdon bypass on Monday night.

John and Carrie Clifford broke new ground when they drove along the northbound carriageway of the bypass after offering to donate £250 to Cancer Research UK.

Friend Jane Day, who has also been on the new road, said it was a breeze to drive along.

"There were no problems at all," she said.

"People around here have been waiting for this for a long time and it was good to drive along it without any problems."

The Blunsdon bypass is a two-mile dual carriageway designed to link local roads with the A419 by replacing the Turnpike roundabout.

The project has been ongoing since September 2006 and as part of the scheme, the BP garage, and former Little Chef restaurant that stood on the Turnpike Roundabout, were demolished.

Speed restrictions between the Turnpike roundabout and Castle Eaton have been in place since work began and the Highways Agency has warned drivers to take the route carefully until they are accustomed to it.

Driving along the A419 has seemed a breeze, but an utter nightmare to get onto the A419 heading to Stratton / Oxford from the Northern Sector (Turnpike roundabout) as it the traffic just clogged up and cars were not moving at all. Hopefully this will settle down.

"No problems at all" ?????

So who is telling the truth? GWR travel warning me that there were problems with the traffic lights - while I was stuck in the tailback. Or the adver saying everything has been sweetness and light.

Have they removed the restricted speed limits/cameras yet?

I bet they haven't...

Ah Good old BHH,never slow at wanting to gain cheap publicity for the hotel, doubtless Cancer Research UK will be pleased with the £250,but let's just hope the new by-pass doesn't just encourage people to drive straight past the BHH turning!

Justin, Grimly - well I go along this route every day, and yesterday was the worst it's been for a LONG time coming along Thamesdown drive from Asda took nearly an hour to get to the bypass yesterday! Fine this morning though. Frontier - why would they have removed the speed restrictions? It's more dangerous than ever at the moment, especially at the roundabout!

Justin, please can you look into why the new feeder road along side the motorola factory will only be a single lane each way when completed. its shown on Highways Agency's dwg 1001361.10-A-283 rev A.
The road will take traffic from the northern expansion to the M4, Highworth etc, also traffic from the opposite direction into swindon. the road is not adequate for now let alone the year 2024 forcast? This is the Northern entrance to swindon after all

It's a right pain in the b** now if you want to turn right (going northbound) to Blundson/Highworth. You have to turn off just at the begining of the new road, up and over new bridge (which is cone city and very confusing and difficult to see who has right of way) and then sit at lights to go straight across 4 lanes of 'old road'!! It take threee times as long as it used to, but hey that's progress for you!!

I was joking - of course they'll try and screw a few hundred more speeding fines out of the road users.

normally I disagree with the use of speed cameras but in this instance, the use of the cameras is understandable, the 40mph speed restriction is there for good reason...to maintain the safety of the workforce who are working on this project.

If drivers choose to ignore the speed restriction they put not only their lives in danger but also the lives of the workforce.

All too often I see accidents where workmen working on road improvement schemes are either serious injured or killed due to drivers ignoring speed restrictions.

I must go and drive on it before the surface starts to crack up after 3 months and we have one lane coned off for months while they resurface it.

No, they are seriously killed or injured due to being hit by drivers.

Less than 14% of road traffic fatalities involve speeds in excess of the posted limit for the given road and given the rare occasions when workmen are killed and injured, I very much doubt excess speed is the major issue.

Forward planning , old son! The Robber McBroon wil have taxed us all off the roads by then!
We will never get rid of him with all his overseas "friends" plus the millions who now work for the "government" voting for Nu-Liebore
whenever we have elections that matter!

Regards the comment made by trend about access onto the Highworth road, Hubby actually completely missed the turning the other morning and ended up off down the A419 to Cricklade, great detour in rush hour traffic!! He claimed it was not signposted well enough at all coming from Thamesdown drive direction. I guess these are all teething problems and he ( and I ) will be more aware of this in future but considering it was the first day of the new layout you would have thought they would have at least made things a bit clearer.

Grumpy old man, Swindon says...
12:43pm Thu 3 Jul 08

So hubby didn't see the big yellow signs then? Or the big flasing matrix sign that advised you to be careful and pay more attention to the signs as the road layout had a major change? Right.....

Grumpy- as so many other people have said before you are just that, a very grumpy narrow minded person who just likes to wind people up. This is what I was told by him, why am I not to believe him?!! To be honest I don't even care as rarely have the misfortune to use this road. Why bother using this comment section when you get sarcasium like this back? Perhaps all these flashing signs etc just serve to confuse people. We are not all perfect which clearly you think you are given a lot of your comments. I guess you have nothing better to do with your time than moan!!!! Quite frankly I have better things to do with my time. I guess you have never ever been distracted by something and missed your turning then??!!

"Grumpy" and "Grumpy old man" are two different people...just an FYI ma'am.

Grumpy old man, Swindon says...
2:14pm Thu 3 Jul 08

Quite. Maybe I should change my sign-on name.

And in any case, driving any vehicle while distracted to the point of missing at least 4 very large bright yellow signs is surely dangerous driving is it not?

BTW, while we're in flame mode, I haven't complained about anything here, it's you doing the complaining!???? Actually (and I use this road at least twice EVERY day), I thought they were doing a very good job of managing the large amounts of traffic using the road while these works continue.

Grumpy old man, Swindon says...
2:16pm Thu 3 Jul 08

Actually, reading your posts again, I wonder what you would like them to do? In your first post you complain that there aren't enough signs. In your second post you then complain that there are too many and it is confusing. Which is it?

trend, swindon says...
2:30pm Thu 3 Jul 08

There are not many signs and if you are beside a lorry you miss them completly as they are all on the inside lane. I only made the Highworth turn okay because I guessed that is where they would direct traffic and kept to the inside lane. Even giving it 100% attention it was still easy to miss as lane looked blocked there were so many cones on it! Considering you used to turn from the right hand lane, there should be signs on both the inside and outside lanes to warn drivers.

ronnie43cats, swindon says...
3:25pm Thu 3 Jul 08

Opps I do apologise to Grumpy. As I said I cannot comment on what there is in the way of signs and what there is not as I do not use this road regularly and have not used it since the change of layout. All I was simply commenting on was the article and the information given to me by my Husband. Why would he lie about such a small thing?! Why would I?! I doubt very much he wanted to take the longer route that morning. In fact he left early as he knew the road layout had changed and wanted to ensure he was not late for work. The only distraction he had in the car is a small child so sorry if you think we should leave all children at home when driving!!!! From what trend has said it seems quite easy to miss. I will let you know when I have had the chance to take this route myself. If I can make it without error then I am sure Hubby is just plain stupid. I guess that is what you are suggesting......

Grumpy old man, Swindon says...
4:25pm Thu 3 Jul 08

??? When did I say your husband is stupid? When did I say you or your husband was lying? I just fail to see how anyone could miss the (plentiful)signs, that's all.
