Forward Swindon's growth strategy presented to town bosses

A VISION for Swindon as a place to do business was presented to town bosses on Friday.

Ian Piper, of Forward Swindon, presented the town’s new Growth Strategy, the draft of which was adopted by Swindon Council last Wednesday.

Mr Piper explained that the vision had benchmarked Swindon against 10 other ‘Premier League’ towns.

The benchmarking exercise suggested that Swindon’s economy is productive, with a resident skills base well matched to its current economy, well located, well placed to capture a share of future economic growth, and enjoys a cost competitive location.

One of the greatest opportunities for Swindon, says the report, is in technology, especially the low carbon centre.

The UK’s first public hydrogen filling station, for instance, has just opened at Honda´s South Marston plant.

The report concluded that the Swindon of 2026 will be a hub of advanced engineering and technology, while maintaining a diverse, private sector led economy.

The public consultation document will be made available this week, with a consultation programme running until November 13.
