SWINDON North MP Justin Tomlinson believes Nadine Dorries return to face her constituents will be much worse than anything she faces in the Australian jungle.

Yesterday it was announced Ms Dorries, who is MP for Mid-Befordshire, will be appearing in the ITV show I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here, which could see her away from her constituency for almost a month.

She is thought to be receiving £40,000 for her appearance on the show, which she claims will help highlight issues in her area.

Mr Tomlinson said it was unacceptable and that being an MP was a full-time job.

“What Nadine has done is bag herself £40,000 and at the same time fuelled her constant desire for fame," he said.

“While she may face some grim tasks in the jungle it will be nothing compared to dealing with the furious constituents she is meant to be representing who are all, quite rightly, questioning how she will be able to do that on the other side of the world.

"It would have helped if she had already registered not to collect her MP salary during that month and also if she had said that every penny of her £40,000 appearance fee would go to the charities she is claiming to be out there promoting.

“There are too many MPs who treat their role as a bit of a sideline.  Gordon Brown MP is a classic example, only occasionally popping in, a guest appearance in Parliament – yet still on a full-time MP’s salary.

"If you as an MP wants to do something else, step aside and let someone who will work full-time as an MP have a chance. We all collectively have a duty to try and restore faith in political process, which was so badly damaged in the expenses scandal.”

Ms Dorries is currently suspended from the Conservative Party.
