A WEEK of action by Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has come to an end.

In the past week, the service focused on a variety of safety messages relevant to the festive season, and held events in the town.

A fire engine and the fire safety display was at the Orbital shopping centre on December 6, with firefighters and other staff on hand to talk to people about keeping their homes safe.

The week of action finished on Friday, with a crashed car display in the Hooper’s Place car park, Old Town, to drive home the message of not drinking and driving during the Christmas period.

Group manager Ian Jeary said: “The build-up to Christmas is always a concern for us – we have to make sure that shops are safe despite the extra stock, licenced premises are always a lot busier and the risk of drink-driving is greater.

“This is the first time that we’ve gone out into the community in this way, and I’m hoping that we have got our safety messages across to a wide range of people over the week. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Christmas.”
