A COLLECTION of rare Adver cartoons will be going under the hammer this weekend.

Town Auctions, in Old Town, has seven original cartoons, depicting the Swindon Town football team, which date back to 1910.

The cartoons were drawn by former Adver employee Will Thomas and they show images of the football team preparing to take on teams such as Newcastle and Leyton Orient.

The works will go under the hammer on Saturday and are expected to reach £50 for each.

The pictures were brought to Craig Cook, owner of Town Auctions in Old Town, a couple of months ago by a family who wanted them to go to a home where they would be appreciated.

Craig said: “I have had cartoons in before but to have the original artwork for these, you don’t get that very often.

“I think there will be a lot of interest in them because it is Swindon and it’s the football team, so there could be fans who want them, but it is also the social history side of it.

“I think they are being sold because the family want them to go to a good home. “They have had them in the family for a long time and have kept some.

“We have also had some condolence cards come in, which feature in the cartoons. I had never seen them before but apparently they were given out after Swindon had beaten a certain team.”

The lots are included in the Town Auction’s sale day on Saturday, featuring antique to modern furniture, pictures and paintings, glass and chinaware, metalware, tools and collectables.

Viewing is available on Friday, between midday and 7pm.
