A PRIMARY school which was criticised by inspectors last year is on the up.

Mountford Manor School, in Walcot, which is part of the White Horse Federation, was told it needed to improve after a visit from Ofsted inspectors in October.

A report of a monitoring inspection visit, released yesterday, shows the school, at which Nick Capstick is executive head, is improving.

Inspector Jane Neech said in the report: “The executive headteacher and senior leaders have set to work to tackle weaknesses in behaviour and teaching in a forthright way.

“Leaders have concentrated on raising teachers’ expectations of how pupils should behave in lessons.

“The new behaviour policy links behaviour and learning together and provides a whole school approach to rewards and sanctions.

“Staff say they feel better equipped to help pupils behave positively.

“Senior leaders and governors are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified at the recent section 5 inspection.”

Ofsted will continue to monitor the school.
