TURNING 100 was just like any other day for Millie Deadman, who marked the momentous occasion yesterday.

Millie, who lives at the Grove Hill Care Home, in Highworth, was surrounded by family and friends who threw a party for her.

Millie moved from Haslemere, in Hampshire, six years ago to be nearer to her daughter Lyn Hinde, 72.

Millie left school when she was only 14 and became a ladies maid before she married in 1937 to Ronald Deadman, who died in 1969.

The couple had two children, Lyn and Julian, and Millie now has four grandchildren, who were there to join in the celebrations.

When Millie was asked how it felt to reach the milestone age, she said: “Well it feels like any other day.”

One of the centenarian’s main loves was raising money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind. She has raised thousands for the charity over the years and even had a dog named after her.

Millie received a card from the Queen Lyn said her mum was overwhelmed by it all.

“I think to start with she didn’t want a big fuss made, but I think she has enjoyed her day,” she said.

“I don’t think we expected her to reach this age, but since she has been at the home she has been happy and that has helped.

“She used to like walking the dogs and she loved going to garden centres to look at the gardens, because her husband used to be a keen gardener and they had a lovely garden.”
