HONDA:' Economy will be hit'
6:42pm Friday 11th January 2013 in News
Heydar Faramarzi, chairman of the Swindon Chamber of Commerce
NEWS of 800 jobs going at Honda will have a huge impact on the community of Swindon according to business experts.
Heydar Faramarzi, chairman of the Swindon Chamber of Commerce, has spoken of his shock at the announcement but says the chamber will do all they can to help those who will be affected.
Mr Faramarzi said: “I heard the news very early yesterday morning, I didn’t even hear rumours about it, so it came as a big shock.
“It is really bad news, not only from the economy perspective but also from the community perspective.
“It is going to be very hard for these people and from a Chamber of Commerce point of view we will do all we can to help – whether they need consultation, or need help setting up their own business, we will do what we can to assist them.”
Mr Faramarzi said that the job losses will not only affect the individuals who will be laid off, but have a knock on effect on the entire economy.
He said: “These are the people who live and shop in Swindon and now they will have little or no income to spend, which will have a domino effect on retail.
“I just hope the consultation period will be as long as is possible, that way the people who are affected are in a job for as long as possible and it will give other organisations the chance to put plans in place.”

We have heard that Honda are to stop production on the Jazz in Swindon later this year. If this is true then Honda could be getting even smaller.
I agree with Noah's Ark, Swindon needs to draw more companies in or we as a town could one day end up in trouble.

Let me guess , you didnt work on the production line did you ?? no way can anyone work on that line for 24 years without major injury or retiring early from being exhausted !!!

At a time when we should all be coming together for the greater good of all, I pains me to see how people can be so selfish and so blind.

Especially when employers come from other nations and cultures and is mass market sectors where they need to attract large numbers of employees... the companies that offer better pay and conditions are the ones who prosper. It has little or nothing to do with unions. Employers only ever do what they want to do, not what unions want them to do, although the clever/good ones let the unions pretend they got their way.

That aside, the only real problem with your post is that, as we're seeing at Honda, workers also have the unions to 'thank' for them not now having a job at all.
Progress?

Who ever decided to move to full production whilst employing hundreds on short term contracts during a time when they were not shifting cars is to blame. Someone based in Swindon I guess. Had they not employed more staff the employees they are now having to get rid of could well have been safe in their jobs for another year, by which point honda could well be selling cars again
Honda is not selling its cars, this is not the fault of the Unions, that is the fault of the designers and directors and members of the board, shareholders that have not been able to adapt to a changing market and a new economic cycle.
