HIGHWORTH and District Lions have thanked everyone who helped them raise a total of £40,000 last year.

The group, which is looking for new volunteers, raised the sum over the last 12 months thanks to the support of the community.

A spokesman said: “The Highworth and District Lions owe a big thank you to our community.

“You’ve supported our shop in Newburgh Place through donations of goods and furniture, you’ve attended events we’ve hosted such as the Big Day Out at Supermarine Rugby in September and to our surprise and gratitude many of you gave generous donations ahead of the Christmas season.”

The group was busy all year taking residents of all ages out in its new minibus, they distributed £2,900 worth of food vouchers to elderly residents at Christmas, provided transport for a party of school children from Chernobyl, and bought new kit for the Highworth under-14 football team and the junior South Marston rugby team.

The group supported the Highworth Festival Committee with a donation of £2,500 and the firework display and the switching on of the Christmas lights – and much more.

In total, the Lions donated nearly £21,000 to nearly 60 charities, local organisations and families in need.
