Nominate someone for the Pride Of Swindon Awards
7:10pm Wednesday 23rd January 2013 in News By Matthew Edwards
The mayor Mick Bray
THE mayor of Swindon can’t wait to cast his eye over the nominations for this year’s Pride of Swindon awards.
The awards were launched in November and people have until the end of January to get their nominations in for this year’s award.
The awards started in 2008 and have unearthed some of the most deserving volunteers and fundraisers in the town.
Mayor Mick Bray is supporting this year’s awards and says he wishes he could vote for individuals who deserve the award.
He has said that the nominations are coming in from the public and he is looking forward to February 1 when he can see all the worthy causes.
He said: “Demonstrating our support for the awards will draw the attention and inspire the younger generation to realise the importance of helping others. It is going well, I spoke to the people last week to see how nominations are going but I don’t want to stick my nose in until February 1.
“It is always nice to look through the nominations and see people who you may not be aware of any worthy causes.
“We’ve all got good neighbours and all know people who deserve some recognition for what they do.
“West Swindon alone has more than 100 charities and each of these charities is a wheel, and in the centre of that wheel is a cog who helps make everything work – those cogs are the people we are looking for. “Without the hard work of those people, which often goes unrecognised, a lot of these charities would not survive.”
This year the panel of judges are looking for nominations from those who work in the voluntary sector and give up their time and services to help others.
They could be someone who helps out a neighbour, a young person who is a role model or a teacher who is an inspiration – in fact anyone who goes that extra mile.
