MEAT lovers have helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

The New Calley Arms in Wanborough has raised £5,000 over more than two years by holding meat raffles every week.

The money has been divided between the Prospect Hospice, based in Wroughton, Parkinson’s UK, Prostate Cancer UK, Alzheimer’s Society and The British Heart Foundation.

Landlady Lesley Berry, who runs the pub with Simon Coakes, said they were delighted with the total.

“The meat raffles began before Simon and I started here and they originally raised funds for the Wanborough Scouts,” said Lesley.

“It has taken a little over two years to get this £5,000. We want to thank the customers for giving their support.

“We usually raise between £30 and £40 a week but it all adds up gradually.”

Representatives from the charities visited the pub on Sunday to collect the donations.

The pub buys the meat for the raffle from Mike McGuire’s in Havelock Street.

It is a pity that the money raised isn't going to an animal welfare charity.

Why? What's wrong with killing animals?
It's what 99.9999999999% of evolution is about!

You chose a bad bay to bring this up. From the BBC web site, "Cats are one of the top threats to US wildlife, killing billions of animals each year":

So according to your philosophy, shouldn't we be culling cats for the greater good?

To be fair, what's good for evolution isn't necessarily what ought to be good for us

Absolutely, these evil little creatures should be wiped from the face of the earth - the sooner the better.
Revolting animals.

Apologies for not reading the thread. I had no idea that my comment in support of animal charity would end up being directed at cats! As the nature of the article was about meat consumed by humans, I was, of course, directing my comment at support of farm animal charities such as Compassion in World Farming.
