THE butterflies of Studley Grange Butterfly World were treated to a bit of culture yesterday courtesy of the Grand Opera of Belarus.

The company’s Madam Butterfly was on hand to sing to the insects ahead of the cast and crew coming to the Wyvern Theatre to perform the opera next month.

The opera tells the story of a trusting Japanese maiden who catches the attention and affections of an American officer. In order to become his bride she must cross cultural boundaries and defy the will of her family.

Nina Scharubina, who plays the title role, was taken to Studley Grange to see some of the 30 species of butterfly that are kept there.

Hundreds of the butterflies fly around in the 600 square metre hot house.

Theatre director Derek Aldridge said they were looking forward to the production coming to Swindon next month.

“I am delighted to see opera take centre stage and can promise audiences a memorable experience,” he said.

“Live operatic singing is a truly breath-taking skill to witness and takes you on an emotional rollercoaster.”

Grand Opera of Belarus will perform Puccini’s La Boheme on March 2 and Madam Butterfly on March 3.
