A MAN was killed and another suffered life threatening injuries in a car accident near Liddington late last night.

The incident happened at 11.17pm when a black Renault Clio travelling along the B4192 towards Swindon from the Aldbourne direction, crashed.

The 22-year-old male driver, and a rear seat passenger were both trapped in the vehicle and had to be cut free by firefighters.

Doctors attempted to resuscitate the driver at the scene and he was taken to the Great Western Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The rear seat passenger received serious multiple life-threatening injuries and is being treated at Frenchay Hospital.

The other three passengers received minor injuries.

Police officers, ambulance crews, fireghters and three SWIFT medic doctors attended the scene.

Doctors Jonathan Glover, Dan Bawden and James Mapstone were involved in attempting to resuscitate the driver.

Dr Glover said: “It was a distressing incident for everyone involved, we know the area well but it is a good stretch of road, it is appropriately limited for speed and the collision occurred just going downhill from the 60mph into the 40mph zone, which subsequently goes into a 30mph zone.

“I don’t think there are any problems with the speed limits on the road. It is very upsetting - it is another young fatality on the roads this winter.

“From what I can tell, this was an incident in which alcohol does not appear to have been involved.

“The driver was given full hospital-style resuscitation as soon as myself and Dr Bawden arrived at the scene and was taken straight to hospital, where he died from his injuries.”

Two fire crews from Stratton and the emergency support unit from Chippenham also attended to cut the driver and rear seat passenger free from the car, which had flipped on to its roof.

Police said friends of the five men were also travelling on the road at the same time in a silver Vauxhall Vectra.

The 27-year-old driver of this vehicle was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was released on police bail without charge pending further inquiries.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who was travelling on the road at the time and may have seen either of the vehicles.
