ONE of the greatest steeplechasers of all time is to be paraded at the Betfair Lambourn Open Day.

Kauto Star, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice as well as numerous other prestigious races, will be paraded during the afternoon of the open day, which takes place on Good Friday.

The gelding, who was retired last year, is now in the care of Laura Collett, the three day eventer based near Lambourn on the Membury Estate.

Another highlight of the day is a performance by The Household Cavalry with their Musical Ride. This unique equine display has been performing in Britain and abroad since 1882 and continues to wow the crowds with the soldiers dynamic display of horsemanship.

With 28 horses and 36 soldiers the display includes four state trumpeters and the Queen’s drum horse and is a breathtaking site.

Soldiers from the Household Cavalry will also show off their jumping skills when they take on top jockeys, including AP McCoy and John Francome, in an exciting Show Jumping competition against the clock.

Other activities in the afternoon include schooling over fences and hurdles by top jockeys and a performance from Rockwood’s Dog Display.

Yards and equine sites will open between 8.30am and 1pm and events in the Show Ring run from 1pm until 5pm.

The afternoon entertainment includes farrier displays, pony rides, children’s activities and a vast array of trade stands and food stalls, open from 10am, providing plenty of shopping opportunities.

Mark Smyly, chairman of the event, said: “Our aim is to promote both the sport of horseracing and Lambourn and to raise money for the welfare of our hard working stable staff. Our hope for this year is for unlimited sunshine and that we put on a really fun day for everyone.”

Tickets cost £12 for the day and £6 after 1pm, whilst children under 12 go free.

Money is raised for local charities, the Lambourn Valley Housing Trust and Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust.
