Cameras to target bus lane motorists
9:00am Thursday 14th March 2013 in News By David Wiles
A van driver uses the bus only road in Ermin Street, in Stratton
SWINDON Council plans to use cameras to catch motorists driving illegally in bus lanes and through bus gates – and slap them with a fine of up to £90.
Cabinet will meet on Wednesday to consider plans to spend £180,000 on four special cameras to start enforcing the regulations on bus lanes and gates, which can only be used legally by buses, bicycles and emergency services and other authorised vehicles.
Swindon Council says enforcement in Swindon is currently carried out by Wiltshire Police but, due to competing pressures and priorities, they have not been able to provide consistent enforcement.
Spot surveys showed there were an estimated 610,000 breaches last year.
The council says a lack of continual enforcement has led to some motorists regarding the traffic signs associated with bus lanes and gates as advisory rather than compulsory.
Coun Keith Williams, the cabinet member for leisure and strategic transport, said he hoped enforcement would reduce the problem, as private motorists in bus lanes impede buses.
And he said those wrongly passing through bus gates, such as Torun Way, in North Swindon, cause rat-running through estates, and sometimes trigger traffic lights to stop traffic on main roads, such as on Wootton Bassett Road at the junction with Penzance Drive.
He said: “It’s a case of putting the message across and helping people understand the rationale behind it.
The new mobile cameras and changes to signage or orders would be funded from existing capital budgets.
The digital cameras would disregard authorised vehicles, but other motorists would receive a £60 fine, which would be halved if paid within 14 days, or increased to £90 if unpaid within 56 days.
It is estimated the fine income would be £100,000 a year, of which £30,000 would cover running costs, with the surplus used for highway maintenance.
Paul Jenkins, the managing director of Thamesdown Transport, which is backing the scheme, said: “Bus lanes and gates help us to deliver reliable and punctual services for our passengers, because they keep journey times consistent, even when there is traffic congestion.
“Unfortunately, because there has been no enforcement until now, the lanes and gates are widely misused by other vehicles, slowing the buses down.
“If they are restored to their original purpose it will help us provide quicker journey times across Swindon, which will benefit our passengers.”

Very obviously, this is about raising money.
there were an estimated 610,000 breaches last year
motorists would receive a £60 fine, which would be halved if paid within 14 days, or increased to £90 if unpaid within 56 days.
So, a likely revenue of at least £18,300,000 then.
THAT'S why the cameras will be guaranteed to go up.

As for bus lanes... It wouldn't be so bad if there were actually any buses using them!
And also pay for the cameras that are put up in order to fine us.
If the bus companies are so keen to provide 'faster' journeys for their customers, why aren't they paying for the cameras?

They *always* trigger the lights there, and also at the junction of Penzance Drive with Rodbourne Road, where drivers clearly don't understand the No Entry sign. Weekends are the worst, idiots from all over the place ignoring the perfectly clear road signs to get into the outlet centre west carpark rather than following those signs to the north carpark a few hundred yards away.
If the camera revenue is ringfenced and used for much-needed road repairs, then more power to their elbows sez I.

As for buses being a source of congestion. Well yes they are, but the trouble is the other 99% of congestion that isn't caused by buses. If you think it's bad now what would congestion be like if all the bus passengers decided to drive instead?
Empty buses? Do we have driverless buses now? Perhaps what is meant is buses with just the drivers on board - a bit like most of the cars on Swindon's roads.
As a driver I support and encourage the use of bikes and public transport because it means that when I do have to travel by car there are fewer other cars and hence less congestion!
Polish (EU) drivers? Won't that be covered by the new European law that from this year means that foreign motorists will no longer be able to avoid paying fines?

I think it's a bit of a joke though saying that cars in the bus lanes are holding up the buses, when the roadworks down Penzance Drive have been holding up many bus services for the last six months! Perhaps they should start fining people for digging the roads up, that should ease traffic jams.

And the ones who beep, beep, beep their horns whilst driving down the back alleys? You know who you are. You're the noisey ones disturbing the peace and quiet. Simply, bus lanes in Swindon should only operate at peak times 7.30am the morning till 9.30am and from 3.30pm to 6pm. At all other times they should be open to traffic. This would ease congestion everywhere. As for buses, the companies make enough money each year, they should contribute alot more to the up keep of the local roads. Absolutely. It is utterly ridiculous for bus lanes to remain empty and almost unused for many hours of the day while other motorists sit in long queues of congestion staring out their windows at the empty road next to them.
Madness.

So long as unfair things aren't done (like a 30mph speed camera being set to trigger at 30.001mph or traffic light cameras where the amber light lasts only a second) I've no problem with enforcement cameras.
However, I would far rather see more police out and about in unmarked traffic cars to catch the morons who drive dangerously, use mobile phones, drink drive, etc. etc.

Although itsamess3 has tried, pointlessly, to suggest otherwise, all of the statistics I've posted in this thread regarding road tax are entirely correct and accurate.
Fluent in 7 languages, and yet barely able to spell in English. Good work.

"He also knows full well that 'busses' is not the accepted and correctly used modern spelling"
Fact-the OED defines spellings and their origins. Exam boards used to mark down for errors. Buses is a 21st century change from busses-but still valid.
Unlike some of your clangers in many of your posts (too many to point out and pettiness to do so).
The so called statistics you have claimed as to RFL are far from accurate as are your claims as to compared emissions. LGVs may well achieve the emission standard for zero RFL but penalised under the number of axles and suspension type.

Everything else you've posted is nonsensical waffle, unsuccessfully designed to desperately try and make it appear you know what you're talking about.
As for your spelling of 'busses':
Buses vs. busses
In 21st-century English, buses is the preferred plural of the noun bus. Busses appears occasionally, and dictionaries list it as a secondary spelling, but it’s been out of favor for over a century. This is true in all main varieties of English.
Do learn to accept when you are wrong and when you've been shown up as wrong.
You are using a spelling that has been out of favour for over 100 years.
Your continued inability to ever accept you're wrong - in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary - does you know favours.
This is extremely concerning, given your occupation as a leading, internationally admired nuclear scientist.

"That is simply a document fact".
"does you know favours"
As for busses v buses. The University Press provided this information.
Busses and buses are both listed as nouns and verbs as the plural of the abbreviated omnibus to bus in 1961.
Appeals were made due to further meanings of the word busses, which were finally ratified as buses to relate to passenger carrying vehicles. Busses had been relegated as a second choice to buses as the plural and busses and bussing confirmed as meaning to transport people from one place to another.
Collins were the first to put that in their new issue-OED is in print now.
So in fact all you have achieved is demonstrating that you make errors far more often than most--and that your research capabilities are very poor.

'Busses' is not a widely used or accepted spelling of the word, regardless of the one source you've doubtless spent hours locating that doesn't even back up your claim to any worthwhile degree.
Your relevance and worth at this site has been reduced to less than zero, by myself and several others, in a matter of days.

There is nothing particularly clever in knowing that the OED lists both spellings and that they are both nouns and verbs. As the OED is charged with defining the english language and sanctioning new words--they are the authority. OED will also give the history of all words in depth if you use the option to sign in to their site.
Do remember you are the man who argued for over a week that diesel/electric trains were pure electric--so nice to hear all the new HS2 all electic trains and lines have been approved.

You clearly breached site rules here and by adding your monologue left your electronic footprint-not so bright are you.
There was only person one on this site who has ever made his identity known. This resulted in you harassing him for months on end regarding having him arrested. You claimed to have put a surveillance camera outside his property and to drive past that property. Bearing in mind that your posts here so show that you have severe mental problems, I think that he and his family had reason to feel physically menaced by you.
Now you are threatening to track me down, with references to you having secret software and me leaving my 'electronic footprint' in my posts. Luckily I am more intelligent that you and technically more adept and so have no fear of this. However, that's besides the point - you are threatening to track down someone who posts here and have already demonstrated that this results in physical harassment and stalking.
Now some questions which you have still chosen not to answer. I'll number then so it will be easy for us to tick them off one by one:
1. Why is it that a self proclaimed internationally renowned scientist (who therefore must have studied mathematics) is unable to spell the word 'operator' and denies that he has spelled it incorrectly?
2. What is my computers MAC address, as you say you have tracked it down?
3. How did I manage to get shown round the experimental fusion reactor in Oxfordshire - as you claim you work there and it's 'top-secret'?
Not so bright, are you?

Terms and conditions--do ask Tim as he recently quoted the site terms where it breaches to transfer material from the site to outside sources.
In your case you added comments to an article on a domain site to encourage others to read it. Simple-by adding to the domain-if no electronic trace was found you could not add the comment you made.
Only one person identified themselves here--add blindness to your faults.
No claim by me to have secret software--a simple task to trace the origin of the electronic pathway. Not illegal unless hacking into the particular computer.
More like you coming here and targetting me with your abusive comments which have nothing to do with the articles-commonly known as stalking and trolling.
You have consistently misquoted what and why i planned to do what i did-my aim was to prove that person to be an habitual liar as once identified the person who lied in court to have 2 persons convicted will face justice-my efforts have secured an appeal and on the warned list.
Your 4 questions
1. Mathematics has no relationship to spelling-scientific maths you should no as you claimed to have studied physics.
2. Tracing an electronic footprint is not illegal and can only be used if the user has broken internet law or a potential crime is suggested.
3. On your claim you were invited to view the reactor i told you then-general viewing is a guided tour and the only persons allowed in the reactor room are staff and visitors with security clearance.
I have moved twice since that debate-do keep up.

org/wiki/Operator_(m
athematics)
No-one who had studied maths would think it was spelled 'operater'. Even in non-mathematical use it's never spelled that way. By the way in your answer it should be spelled 'know', not 'no'.
2. Where do I refer to legality? You continually go on about me leaving my 'electronic footprint' and you having software to track me down. It seems to be some pathetic effort to try and scare me. I know you're talking **** and you know your talking ****. So what's my MAC address?
3. I have only ever said that I had been shown around the fusion reactor. I never gave any details of specific areas (can look out the past post if you like) - you are the one who said I couldn't have done that. In fact in your post here you said "yet still claimed to have been invited to view a top secret reactor". Not very 'top secret' if I they have tours around it, is it :-(
So as expected, you have rambled on but been unable to answer three very simple questions. Do try harder!
As regards "I have moved twice since that debate". Why would I know that and why would I care?
Ironically, the one person who is most responsible for "misreporting what you said" is you!

Even more people would expect such an individual to be able to laugh off their error, once pointed out to them, as a simple - inevitable - typo.
However, nobody can quite believe that such a person would, for a number of days, continually repea the claim that their misspelling was actually a correct spelling.
