Drivers told to slow down outside Moredon Primary School
PARENTS worried about speeding motorists outside a school are doing their bit to keep the community safe.
A petition containing more than 380 signatures has been gathered by a group of parents from Moredon Primary School worried that a child could be knocked down if something is not done.
Mum-of-four Sarah Evans, who has three children at the school, started the petition to highlight speeding outside of the school. Within six weeks she has formed a community ‘speed watch’ group.
The group will meet for the first time tomorrow and hope that its presence along the road will get drivers to slow down.
Sarah said: “We want to make it safer for the children and parents to get to school and also for the residents.
“This road has a problem of speeding and even with the crossing outside the school, people just don’t stop.
“There is the added issue of parking which makes it hard for drivers to see when people are trying to cross the road.
“We are going to be starting a community speed watch which we hope will make people take notice of their speed and slow down.
“We would like to see traffic calming measures put in along the road.
“If nothing is done, somebody is going to get knocked down.”
Mum-of-three Clara Byrne will be one of the residents taking part in the speed watch group and says that the road has become very dangerous.
She said: “The traffic is day and night and the speeds that cars go at is very dangerous.
“With the way it is at the moment, it is just asking for trouble.
“We are hoping to catch drivers speeding and hope that the police will take action.”
The parents have gained the support of the police who have praised the parents and said that they would like to see more communities doing similar schemes.
Police Sergeant Nick Mawson said: “It is excellent and they are doing a fantastic job for the community.
“This is a good example of the police, council and community working together to resolve speeding here in Moredon and parking issues.
“If people think they have got a problem with speeding in their area they should contact Wiltshire Police or the council.”
