REVISED plans for Redhouse Village Centre have been approved by Swindon Council.

Developer Crest Nicholson has been given the green light to build 33 homes of one, two, three and four bedrooms, plus a community building with associated roads, car parking and amenity space.

The development takes in three plots of vacant land.

The first site is land at Fenby Place, adjacent to homes at Frankel Avenue, where a new community centre, plus 25 car parking spaces, is proposed to be built by Swindon Council following the purchase of the site from the developer.

The second plot is between Wharncliffe Street and Vaughan Williams Way, and is proposed to be developed with 12 homes in an arrangement of three terraces, together with two flats over a garage building, and a three-storey apartment building with 15 flats.

The third and smaller site to the south, adjacent to Greenwood Place and fronting Isambard Way, is proposed to be developed with a terrace of four three-storey town houses. There would be 54 car parking spaces for the homes.

Originally, site one was allocated for a community building, site two was allocated partly for a doctor’s surgery and a public house, with planning permission for two restaurants or cafes, one pub and one takeaway, and site three was previously allocated for a day nursery.

However, in a statement submitted with the planning application last year, Crest Nicholson said there had been no commercial interest in the pub site or from potential operators for the day nursery, and Swindon PCT said there was no demand for a medical centre in the area.

Planning officers approved the application under delegated powers, concluding: “It is considered that these proposals to develop three parcels of land at Redhouse complies with the aims and intentions of the adopted village centre design brief and that the additional residential development has been well designed and laid out so that it will harmonise with existing residential and other development nearby.

“In addition, the proposals will allow the community centre to be delivered to provide a much-needed community facility.”

Justin Tomlinson, the Swindon North MP, said Crest Nicholson had promised a pub at the site and Arkell’s had expressed an interest to build the pub but the developer did not want to accept this offer price for the land.

He said: “It’s very welcome news that the community centre is coming forward. There’s a real appetite for this much-needed facility amongst local residents and community groups. And I will continue to push Crest Nicholson to finally strike a deal over with a pub chain to deliver the promised pub.”
