IS SWINDON too posh for an Old Kent Road equivalent on the new Monopoly board for Wiltshire’s largest town?

That’s what baffled games makers are asking after revealing a dearth of votes for Monopoly’s cheapest site on the board – just 60 Monopoly notes.

It was announced last month that the town is getting its very own official customised board and since then, the public have been voting in their thousands for areas they want to see on the board.

Polls close at midnight on Friday, but so far ideas for a Swindon version of Old Kent Road have been few and far between.

Dan Taylor, Monopoly manager at Winning Moves UK – producing the board under licence from Hasbro – said: “The town appears to be well blessed with potential Mayfairs, which is the top price site on the board.

“From Steam to Lydiard Park and from the County Ground to the Magic Roundabout the votes have been pouring in. Also doing very well is the Wyvern Theatre and also the Coate Water Country Park.

“But Old Kent Road? “There have been hardly any suggestions.

“Perhaps Swindon is too posh to have an equivalent of Old Kent Road on the new board?”

The board will hit shop shelves this October in time for Christmas and Dan said it will feature the great and good of the town.

“We are very excited – without the public this board could not be produced,” he said.

“We would like to formally thank everyone for all their wonderful suggestions. Please keep them coming.”

The identities of the vast majority will be kept under wraps until the board is launched.

“We are keeping it under our Monopoly hats until then,” Dan said.

But he did reveal the Magic Roundabout seems to have caught the public’s imagination.

And not just in Swindon – there have been emails regarding it from across the globe. “It’s world famous,” he said.

“It has got a few votes for being Old Kent Road on the board – but it has also been nominated too for Mayfair, the most expensive site on the board, at 400 Monopoly notes.

“We don’t know which way to turn, pardon the pun,” said Dan The spirit and shape of the customised edition will remain the same as with the traditional Monopoly board game.

The new Monopoly: Swindon Edition will be available extensively online and at all good toy and book stores.

Nominations for landmarks and famous streets, as well as general suggestions, should be sent to swindon@winningmoves.co.uk, or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/swindonmonopoly or by post to SWINDON, Winning Moves UK, 7 Praed Street, London W2 1NJ before the voting deadline of this Friday.
