CREATIVE Swindon College art students are inviting the public to see their work this week.

A total of 55 students are displaying their work in the ground floor of Station Square, Gloucester Street, in the town centre, for the Foundation/Access: Art & Design final show.

Course tutor Denise Roberts said she was impressed by the standard of this year’s work.

“It is the students’ end of year exhibition. All the work on show is what we call their final project. This is seven weeks’ worth of work,” she said.

“We have got everything. We have got fashion, textiles, 3D, ceramics, visual communication and fine art.

“Everyone’s projects are different. Their work reflects their personalities and the things they have learnt while they are on the course.

“It’s brilliant. We are all really proud, they have done really well. We think the show looks really professional and it is a real reflection of their talents and abilities.”

Among the students displaying their work is Sarah-Louise Manley, 19, of Park North, who has created furniture out of waste.

“I just want people to recognise what we throw away so I have made things out of waste,” she said.

“I am really excited for people to see it. I want people to walk through and sit on the chair and have fun with it.”

Her work includes a footstool and shelving made out of an old computer, a hanger made out of the back of a chair and a chair made out of a road sign.

Martin Lane, 41, of Eldene, has created four sculptures inspired by coral, sponges and marine life.

He said: “I have had an aquatic theme through all the projects we have had leading up to the final project. I have been trying to show what happens when every day things like shipwrecks get lost in the sea. Sponges and corals adapt those things.”

Kay Harris, 24, of Liden, was inspired by the meanings people associate with colours for her sculptures.

“I am quite a colourful person and I wanted an excuse to make something colourful,” she said.

“With each of them I tried to make a form that matched the colour.”

Nikki Balson, 18, of Royal Wootton Bassett, was inspired by the starlings flying around Swindon College earlier this year for her piece of work, which includes 250 birds.

“It is all about me growing up. Some of them are smaller and bigger to represent how I have grown up,” she said.

“On some of the birds there are little things written that happened to me like being a bridesmaid when I was five and learning to walk when I was 14 months old. The final bit is studying fine art in Plymouth after finishing at Swindon College.

“When I first started this project there were massive swarms of birds around the college. This was at the time when I had just had my interview for Plymouth. I was thinking lots about my life and where I am.”

The exhibition is open from 10am until 6pm today until Wednesday. It is open on Thursday from 10am-noon. For more information, visit www.swindon-college.ac.uk.
