Atlantic bid floats thanks to donation
1:00pm Thursday 22nd August 2013 in News
A PAIR of rowers from a team aiming to cross the Atlantic are cruising towards their fundraising total, thanks to a huge donation from a local company.
William North and Dan Howie are planning to row across the Atlantic Ocean to raise money for Cancer Research UK, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and St Anna’s.
They are being sponsored by Imagine Cruising, based in Lydiard Field Business Park, who yesterday donated a cheque for £10,000 to the pair.
“It’s a difficult thing they’re doing,” said Sara Rose, the customer support manager at Atlantic Ocean.
“Several representatives went to the Henley Regatta earlier this year and met the pair, who explained what they were doing.
“Everyone was so impressed that we offered sponsorship straightaway.”
The challenge will see the two men row more than 3,000 nautical miles in December, a journey widely seen as one of the toughest endurance tests in the world, which only a handful of people have ever completed.
They will be setting off from the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands and plan to finish at English Bay in Antigua.
“We’re looking at getting everyone in the office involved in helping them,” said Sara. “There is a clock on the wall counting down the time until they set off. We may even send several people from the company out to see them off.
“Hopefully every member of staff will get involved and do some fundraising for the charity.”
