Highworth fundraiser Claire is ready to help again
MOST people mark their 50th birthday with a big party, but Claire Anello is going the extra mile to make sure her big day is memorable.
Claire, of Highworth, is taking on the challenge of walking the Escambray Mountain Trek, in Cuba, in November for CALM – Children's Cancer And Leukaemia Movement – and she is starting her fundraising by holding a charity night at the Twelve Oaks Golf Club in Highworth.
The event, called Bands At The 19th Hole, is taking place on Saturday, September 7, and will feature a host of local bands including Hang Fire, Julie Madgwick and Black Stone.
As well as raising money for CALM, the evening will be raising money for Cancer Research in memory of one of co-organiser Jackie Kerr’s friends.
This is not the first time that Claire has taken on such a challenge, as she completed the Machu Picchu trek for Breast Cancer Care in April last year.
Claire said: “I completed Machu Picchu land I loved it, and when I came back people were asking me what I was going to do for my milestone birthday.
“The trek was an amazing thing to go on especially when a lot of the people on the trek had been affected by breast cancer in some way, it was a real experience.
“So I decided not to have a party and do this trek instead.
“I consider myself lucky because I have three children who are healthy, and so am I, so I wanted to help a local charity and have CALM.
“I am looking forward to it and I am just about to start my training.
“It is difficult because we will be walking between 18km and 20km every day and the terrain is mountainous and quite a bit of it is through jungle. All we can prepare for really is the distance, unless the weather stays as hot then it will become very similar.”
“I am going with three people I met on the Machu Picchu and we are staying for an extra three days at the end, so I will be enjoying my birthday on the beach with a Mojito.”
The event starts at 7pm and tickets cost £10 with the money being split between the charities.
Tickets are available by calling Claire on 07771881376 or Jackie Kerr on 07771648803. To donate visit www.justgiving.com/Claire-Anello
