Best busker’s gong
WHEN the Adver asked the people of the town centre who made the most positive contribution, the response was unanimous.
They nominated someone who spends his days bringing a smile to passing shoppers and brightening up the town, come rain or shine.
Michael Thomas can regularly be found playing a variety of tunes on his harmonica in Regent Street.
The 78-year-old has been playing for a number of years and was delighted to have been given the award.
“I want to thank everyone,” he said. “I’m so happy to have been given this.
“I’m going to keep the award nice and safe.
“People always come up to me and they have always been very generous.”
Michael travels from Cirencester whenever he wants to play and has always found the people of Swindon friendly and welcoming.
He said: “I used to only come on Saturdays but I spoke with people who said they wanted me to come more often.
“I don’t believe it but I’ve been told I’m the best busker in Swindon.”
When he is playing his harmonica, Michael says he disappears into his own world and plays whatever comes into his head.
“I don’t have a set playlist of songs so I just play anything,” he said. “I just really enjoy coming to Swindon and want to just carry on doing it.”
