Fight to keep store out of former pub
A COUNCILLOR has vowed to keep up the pressure to halt one of the biggest supermarket chains in the country opening a new store in Wroughton.
John Newman, a member of Wroughton Parish Council, is appealing to residents to lodge their objections with Swindon Council.
The authority’s planning committee will debate an application for Morrisons to carry out a number of external alterations to the old Three Tuns pub, on Devizes Road, at a meeting next Tuesday.
In July, Morrisons announced its intention to open one of its smaller M local stores at the former pub, which closed in 2011.
A licensing panel on Thursday approved plans for the supermarket giant to sell alcohol between 7am and 11pm on Mondays and Sundays, despite more than 80 objectors coming forward.
Residents and councillors were told at the licensing panel meeting that a number of their concerns relating to traffic issues and noise were matters for planning.
“Residents living immediately opposite are extremely concerned about the external lightning,” said Coun Newman. “I will object.”
Planning permission for the former public house to change use to a retail shop selling alcohol is expected to go through as a permitted development. But Coun Newman hopes council officials will allow a formal planning hearing to be staged so residents can comment.
He said: “There has been a great deal of controversy and 81 people wrote down their objections.
“The principle of change of use should be debated in public and the community should be allowed to voice their concerns.”
Wroughton Parish Council’s planning meeting tomorrow night will discuss the application by Morrison to carry out external alterations to windows, doors, minor works to the existing car park and for a two-metre high fence.
Mr Newman hopes residents will attend. “We will then pass the comments to the planning department,” he said.
Laura Stubbs of Morrisons said: “We are excited about opening a Morrisons M local in Wroughton. We look forward to bringing the building back to life with a store that has fresh food at its heart.”
