Fire started in roof of bungalow
9:50am Thursday 5th September 2013 in News
A FAMILY bungalow was severely damaged yesterday as fire ripped through the tile roof.
Fire crews from Swindon rushed to the incident, in Lanes Farm in Royal Wootton Bassett, and found much of the roof engulfed in flames with smoke billowing out.
No-one was injured but the severity of it meant Marlborough Road was closed for more than three hours.
“We arrived on the scene shortly after 1.30pm and found an intense fire with heavy smoke in the roof of the bungalow,” said Dave Geddes, acting group manager.
“The fire had also begun to spread into the main building.”
Because of the remote location of the bungalow, a water tank was also required.
The building belongs to Caron Roberts Equestrian and is a residential property.
There are stables as part of the business but these were not affected by the fire.
"At this stage the cause of the fire is not known and the amount of damage to the building is unclear,” said Dave.
Neighbour David Large, 67, said: “I heard some banging and crackling, a bit like fireworks, and I thought someone was having quite a big bonfire. There was also an awful lot of smoke.
“A short while later I heard the fire engines. It must have been quite a severe fire going by the amount of engines.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
