DOORS of Lydiard House and the 18th century Walled Garden at Lydiard Park will open to visitors next weekend.
Organised by Swindon Council, the free weekend opening is part of Heritage Open Days, an annual celebration of England’s architecture and culture with visitors given access to properties not usually open or normally charging an entrance fee.
The council-owned stately home and garden will open from 11am to 5pm next Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can tour restored State Rooms to discover more about the St John family, residents for more than 500 years.
As well as seeing portraits, furnishings and furniture, there will be a new display about 160 Camp, a German prisoner of war hospital located in the grounds in the 1940s.
St Mary’s Church will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sunday. It houses the St John family monuments and its polyptych consists of 15 painted folded panels celebrating the heraldry of the family.
The garden will boast late summer flowers.
