Jahmene Douglas nominated for MOBO award
A YEAR ago Jahmene Douglas was set to introduce himself to the country on the X Factor.
Now he has a number one album to his name and has been nominated for his first music award.
Jahmene, 22, has come a long way from stacking shelves at the North Swindon Asda Walmart store and is now hoping to take the MOBOs by storm after being nominated for the best newcomer award.
The Swindon singer, who shot to fame coming second on the X Factor , has admitted it has been hard to watch the latest in the TV talent show, which started last weekend, because he might get jealous of the new artists.
The show gave Jahmene a platform to launch his career and bagged himself a number one with his debut album in July with Love Never Fails, despite a harsh response from music critics.
Jahmene took to Twitter after hearing he has been nominated for the gong this week and said: “So grateful and thankful that @MOBOAwards included me in their best newcomer nominations.”
The Best Newcomer category is always hotly anticipated and this year is no exception.
The category has long provided a platform for the UK’s most exciting artists, launching the careers of NDubz, Emeli Sandé and Rita Ora to name a few.
Jahmene, who performed at the launch of this year’s awards, will be up against a host of other breakthrough artists including Sam Smith who appeared on the recent Disclosure single Latch, Daley, Fuse ODG and Stylo G.
MOBO Awards founder Kanya King said: “MOBO turning 18 is a huge achievement and we have some truly incredible artists on the shortlist for this year’s event.
“They demonstrate the diverse range of music that is at the heart of youth culture in Britain and globally.
“Our aim has always been to give a platform and voice to emerging and established artists; we celebrate these artists all year round.
“We’re really proud of the nominees and wish them all the best with the public vote.”
The MOBO Awards will be held on Saturday, October 19, at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro with chart toppers Rudimental, Australian female rapper Iggy Azalea and three-time MOBO Award winner Tinie Tempah already announced to perform.
Whether Jahmene will win his award is down to the fans with the categories now open to the public via www.mobo.com/voting2013.
