Judge orders arrest in assault case
5:10pm Friday 6th September 2013 in News
A JUDGE has issued a warrant for the arrest of a man who failed to turn up at court to be sentenced for a serious assault.
Ermiyas Zekaryas had been due to face trial on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm before a judge at Swindon Crown Court last month.
But before a jury could be sworn in on the first morning the 21-year-old pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of unlawful wounding.
He was released on bail to allow the probation service time to compile a pre-sentence report.
But the court heard he not only failed to turn up for sentencing but also for appointments to allow the report to be written.
Recorder Michael Vere-Hodge QC issued a warrant without bail for his arrest to get him before a judge for sentencing.
Zekaryas, of Acton, West London, admitted assaulting a man at an address in Lower Stratton on Sunday July 8 last year.
