Pedal power challenge still on track
5:10pm Thursday 12th September 2013 in News
AN 80-year-old grandfather is half way through his mission of cycling the length of the UK to raise cash for the Make-A-Wish charity.
Denis Hedges, of Old Town, embarked on the 800-mile cycle from Lands End to John o’Groats after the organisation supported his grandson Tom Hyde, 13, when he had a rare form of cancer.
They arranged for Tom and his family to be whisked away to swim with dolphins in Florida during treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma – a type of cancer that affects a person’s immune system.
Denis set off on his fundraiser on Saturday.
Yesterday he reached Kendal on the edge of the Lake District. He now has around 415 miles to go.
“Everything has been going well and I am feeling strong,” said Denis. “I’m riding the bike I bought from The Salvation Army for about £120 and it is going better than one I bought for £1,000.“ So far Denis has raised around £1,100. To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/denishedges.
