GWH team cycle 65 miles
12:50pm Friday 13th September 2013 in News
STAFF at the Great Western Hospital have so far cycled 65 miles in their journey from London to Paris.
Nine hospital workers are pedalling the 250 mile journey to raise money for the GWH NHS Foundation Trust Charitable Fund, Brighter Futures.
Some of the team are raising money specifically for the new children’s Emergency Department which is currently being built.
Yesterday Kevin McNamara, the hospital’s communications manager, who is taking part, said spirits were high despite damp weather conditions.
“It has been hard work so far but we are enjoying it. Everyone is chirpy and chuffed to have made it to Portsmouth through the rain,” he said.
“It can only get easier from here because we have done all the hills, so once we get into northern France it is supposed to be fairly flat.”
The team set off at 6pm yesterday morning, cycled 65 miles and spent six hours crossing the Channel.
They will cycle 85 miles today and another 85 miles tomorrow before catching the Eurostar home on Sunday.
Mr McNamara added: “It rained non stop until about 20 minutes before we arrived in Portsmouth and then the sun came out.
“We have had a couple of crashes already but nobody has been injured – just a bit of bruised pride.”
